To Queen Victoria, marriages were about strategic alliances.
Correction: At 5:38, the map of post-war Germany is missing eastern Prussia. The borders of Austria-Hungary should also include portions of northern Serbia and southern Poland.

This video was produced in collaboration between Vox and BBCThree.
Over the course of her 63-year reign, Queen Victoria strategically planned marriages to place her descendants in royal families all over Europe. In doing so, she created one of the most remarkable royal families in history.
By the early 19th century, Europe had been at war for decades. After the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars killed millions, European leaders came together to restore peace by reshaping major states for a new balance of power. Great Britain went on to become one of the strongest states. And years later, Queen Victoria and her husband Albert came up with a plan to maintain that political power - they married their children to monarchs across Europe. By the 1880s Queen Victoria’s children were in several important branches of Europe’s monarchies.
The royal unions didn't play out as Queen Victoria planned, but she continued to make more matches anyway. She had 42 grandchildren, and these 7 ended up on royal thrones. Her grandchildren would end up on the thrones of Britain, Russia, Germany, Romania, Norway, and Spain leading up to the most destructive war Europe had ever seen.
To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Video journalist Sam Ellis uses maps to tell these stories and chart their effects on foreign policy.

Put who ever does your historical maps on probation. That map of Austria-Hungary and Serbia is unacceptable. It should take less than five minutes to find a few sources that support proper historical maps of europe. This channel is supposed to be more educational, please be so.

Finally a video that helps me understand history, my mom named me Victoria Alexandrina, after queen Victoria, and it never felt right to me that I barely knew anything about her or heard anything about her even though she leads so much history with her, I'm trying to learn more now and it's refreshing to find a video that helps me understand what happened during that time

Yeah and Guess what when Bismark used the German Banking system to fund industry as opposed to asset bubbles (real estate) that the Bank of England did --- WWI was a fight between BANKERS. With the Anglo Saxon Bank of England winning. That is why we have the central banks (which are predatory and serve the uber global elite) do the things they do today, which is blowing asset bubbles in real estate, stock market etc. Key point -- Prince Edward and his German cousin Albert. Edward gets Albert to sack Bismark (who for industry and banking was really really good). Albert was a bit dim and that is why Edward was able to advise him to do the WRONG thing.

Pathetic, how people can see these dicks as something amazing or justified. Want to be a subject? You're a citizen in the UK country of England or one of the others, who should be able to openly vote for their elected head of state and not need be reminded of the colonial, wasteful and shameful rule of the the British Empire and monarch. Our military (my organisation) and the UK would strive as a republic and change an image that's been scarred most of the world and UK, from the Empires actions to the Monarchy.

Something that most of us in the West don’t do, mostly because our ideas of Royalty stem from the British Royal family, is to call anyone who is the child of a King or Queen a “princess” or “prince” and leave it at that. But the heir to the crown in most of Europe is called a “crown prince” or “crown princess”. That “princess” of Sweden you pointed out is not just another princess, she is called the Crown Princess because she will inherit the crown once her father King Carl Gustav passes. The British Royal family does indeed have a distinction for the heir as he has been given the title Prince of Wales. When Charles ascends the throne, William will be again called Prince of Wales, a title he had as a child and until he was a bachelor because he was still under Prince Charles title (that’a why he and Harry used the surname “Wales” when they served in the Armed Forces). Spain has the distinction “Princess” for their next presumed heir (unless they have a son) and Infanta for the “spare”. So in the future, if you ever discuss members of the European Royalty, you might want to use this little piece of info, or not. Just a friendly suggestion :)
